CHILD LABOR : MATTER OF CONCERN
In 2014 the worlds most precious award for peace i.e NOBELpeace award was given in favour of those who serve their nation the most one of them is INDIA's gem kailash satyarthi who was nominated for their immense effort against the child labor . now lets know somthing about this .................
Child labor refers to the employment of children. This is illegal in many countries. In rich countries, it is considered as a violation of human rights.
Child labor goes back a long way in time. During the Victorian era, many young children were made to work in factories and mines and as chimney sweeps. Child labor has played an important role in the Industrial Revolution. Charles Dickens worked at the age of 12 in the blacking factory while his family was in prison for debt. In those days, children as young as four were employed in factories producing dangerous working conditions.
With universal education and the introduction of concepts such as human rights and child rights, child labor slowly fell into disrepute. The first general laws against child labor, the Factories Acts were adopted in Britain in the first half of the 19th century. Children younger than nine were not allowed to work.
Poverty is the main reason why child labor exists. Children bring additional income is needed and that parents send them to work. Child labor is common in the poorest regions of the world. Children can work in factories, sweatshops, mines, fields, hotels, match factories, or in households. Some children work as guides for tourists and may end up having sexually abused by them as happens in places like Goa and Kerala.
Like many children working in the informal sector, they manage to escape the scrutiny of labor inspectors and the media. According to UNICEF, an estimated 158 million children aged 5-14 engaged in child labor worldwide. In 1999, the World March against Child Labour, the movement began. Thousands of people marched together to spread the message against child labor.
March, which began Jan. 17, 1998, built an immense awareness and led to the ILO Conference in Geneva. This resulted in the draft ILO Convention against the worst forms of child labor. The following year, the Convention was unanimously adopted at the ILO Conference in Geneva.
Child labor is still widespread in India. It is estimated that between 70 and 80 million child laborers in India. Although there are laws prohibiting child labor, they are blatantly even by educated and knowledgeable people. Young children not yet in their teens often work 20 hours a day in sweatshops and are paid only a pittance.
In many developed countries, there is a boycott movement of goods and products made using child labor. Child labor is a cruel practice. Childhood is a time to play and be carefree, enjoying the company of other children. A child does not have to work as an adult if that practice evil should be banned and the government must ensure that no child is deprived of education because of poverty.
